BOOK REVIEW: TIME RETURN (Red Moon Trilogy Book 2) by Micah Caida

TIME RETURN by Micah Caida
Published by Silver Hawk Press, February 2014

About the Book:
In this coming of age debut trilogy, USA Today Micah Caida turns dystopian young adult fiction on its ear with a breathtakingly fresh science fiction, fantasy story that is as much a thriller as it is a romantic tale.
Her Time. His Time. No Time
Rayen promised to return, Gabby must return, and Tony can’t return.
Three teenage friends are connected by a shared secret that forces a decision with consequences no one expects. When Rayen arrives on the Red Moon sphere again, she finds shocking changes. Her arrival causes more upheaval and danger for the MystiK children, creating a heart wrenching challenge for Callan who must choose between duty and holding onto the one girl he can’t have. But walking away is harder than he expects when a new MystiK male in the sphere is poised to take Callan’s place. Under threat of attack from an unexpected enemy, Rayen and Callan must put their personal feelings aside to unite a village in chaos.
Choices backfire, trust is forfeit and alliances shift as elements of the Damian Prophecy begin to fall into place and the time of reckoning is closer than anyone expected.

MY TAKE:

This is a fun, fast-paced dystopian sci fi series, but if you haven't read the first book you need to do that first. Some series you can jump into - this one you can't. Read my review of TIME TRAP (book one) Here.

TIME RETURN by Micah Caida has time travel, science fiction, coming-of-age, first romance, and dystopian futuristic worlds all rolled up into one fast-paced rollercoaster package.

Each chapter has a specific POV and voice, with each character having a wildly different agenda and interpretation of each situation. Even our three time travelers - Rayen, Gabby and Tony - have different reasons and different goals for returning to The Sphere.

As with the first book, most of the story is from Rayen's viewpoint as she is the catalyst for the story, but this time we have additional POVs and insights, including more chapters from Callan, the love interest who draws Rayen back into this dangerous world. Most of the intricate world-building was established in Book 1, so again, you really need to start at the beginning of the series to appreciate the twists and turns and complexity.

The scenes between Rayen and Callan were frustrating at times, as they deal with the overwhelming emotions of an impossible situation. Their reactions swing between hormonal teenagers to battle-hardened adults - which seems jarring until you remind yourself this is a Lord of the Flies kind of situation, where Callan has been forced to be the adult of the group for far too long, never having a chance at dating or falling in love like a normal teen would.

The ending of this installment leaves the reader dangling on an even larger cliff than the first book. Luckily, the third book is due out this summer (hopefully!) to conclude this thrill ride.

If you like dystopian YA sci fi, you'll enjoy this series. Grab your copies of TIME TRAP and TIME RETURN soon, and then you can eagerly await the final installment with the rest of us! Each book is available on Amazon for $2.99 - well worth a trip on Micah Caida's rollercoaster.

About the Author:
Micah Caida is the melding of two voices, two personalities and two minds - one NYT bestseller and one Award-winner - which often turns up the strangest ideas. Micah enjoys exploring how different characters react and deal with similar situations. Life is often filled with the unexpected - both good and bad. While creating the Red Moon series, Micah hit upon a very unusual "what if" that exploded into an epic story filled with teenagers who face impossible odds, but are the only ones who can save the world from itself.

Cephalopod Coffeehouse Book Club: JUST THE SEXIEST MAN ALIVE by Julie James

I read a lot of books at the beginning of the month (can you say procrastinate?) and was thrilled to find a post on Facebook that one of my favorite contemporary romance authors had a book on sale for $1.99...and I hadn't yet read it! As I type and schedule this post, the month is far from over, but I'm pretty sure this will still be my favorite book of the month. (and it should still be on sale if you want to check it out on AMAZON.)

 ~ * ~ * ~ * ~
(Before I continue with my Coffee House Review, I just want to mention that MY NEW BOOK IS OUT AS OF YESTERDAY! I know we aren't here to plug our own books but wanted to jump up and down a little cuz it's so fresh! Now back to the Book Review!)
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
I discovered Julie James a little over a year ago. My mom had one of her books on the coffee table, and since she'd already read it she sent it home with me. The next week I went to my local book store and bought two more Julie James paperbacks to read on vacation. I was hooked.

Her characters are smart and sexy. Intelligent and driven. And there's just enough legal drama and danger to draw me in. Her FBI series is my favorite, but this one was a pretty fun romp and I finished it in a day. So, fast-paced, fast reading, fun, smart, sexy... what more can you ask for in a contemporary romance?
Just the Sexiest Man Alive, by Julie James
Published by Berkley Sensation, October 2008

About the Book:

No woman could resist him—except the one he wanted most...

Cool, Calm, Collected...

Nothing fazes Taylor Donovan. In the courtroom she never lets the opposition see her sweat. In her personal life, she never lets any man rattle her—not even her cheating ex-fiancĂ©. So when she's assigned to coach People's "Sexiest Man Alive" for his role in his next big legal thriller, she refuses to fall for the Hollywood heartthrob's charms. Even if he is the Jason Andrews.

Confident, Famous, Irresistible...

Jason Andrews is used to having women fall at his feet. When Taylor Donovan gives him the cold shoulder, he's thrown for a loop. She's unlike any other woman he's ever met: uninterested in the limelight, seemingly immune to his advances, and shockingly capable of saying no to him. She's the perfect challenge. And the more she rejects him, the more he begins to realize she may just be his perfect match

MY TAKE:

This is a fun, fast-paced romance between a smart, driven lawyer and the self-absorbed actor she must mentor for his upcoming movie role. Neither one expects the sparks that fly between them every time they're together. The chapters show us alternating points of view between Taylor and Jason, giving a kind of he said/she said quality, because their interpretations of each situation vary so wildly. Ms. James does a great job giving voice to the different characters, including a third POV from another actor trying to steal both Jason's limelight and Taylor's heart.

There's no big suspense or action, but more an internal angst between two emotionally damaged people who have a hard time believing that they might have a chance at real love. If you're looking for a fast read that will tug at your emotions, give Julie James a try. JUST THE SEXIEST MAN ALIVE was a fun read (and on sale), but my absolute favorite of her books is A LOT LIKE LOVE. She also has a new book coming out in May - IT HAPPENED ONE WEDDING - that I can't wait to check out!

LRT Blog Tour: Chaysing Dreams by Jalpa Williby

LRT Book Tours
Once again, I'm hosting for LRT Book Tours, with an interesting new read by debut author Jalpa Williby. It starts off firmly in the YA category, but morphs into more of a NA read as the character ages, so straddling the line between genres but more of a YA with a toe dipped into NA waters.

I haven't finished reading the book yet (and think there might be an excessive use of exclamation points in her writing) but it seems interesting so far. And I kind of love the cover...
 About the Book:
Life…secrecy, deceit, danger…No, no! Run, escape!
“Run!” Her inner voice is shouting. She has to run faster! She’s about to get caught! No, no! She has to get away. Please, she must escape! “Run faster!”
As long as Tess Sanoby can remember, she has always had the same nightmares, where the girl in her dreams is running for her life with an unknown force chasing her. Each time, right before the girl is caught, Tess awakens, shaken with fear and confusion. Who is the girl? What do these dreams mean?
Getting through the growing pains of high school with her best friends Jack and Kylie, and then being accepted into her dream college, Tess is excited to start her life of independence. There, she meets the mysterious trainer and mentor, Chris, and she instantly feels a strong connection with him. Unfortunately, Chris wants nothing to do with her. Although Chris continues to give her the cold shoulder, his overprotectiveness and the occasional slips of sensitivity confuse Tess. Not understanding Chris or their relationship, she is on a constant emotional roller coaster with him. Could her best friends be the stable force that she desperately needs?
Unfortunately for Tess, the more she tries to connect the missing pieces of her life, the more obscure her past and future appear to her. To make matters worse, she realizes she has fallen hard for a man who may be her worst enemy. As passion ignites between the two, she can’t help but surrender her heart and soul to him.
Tess is unexpectedly exposed to a world of secrecy, deceit, and danger, causing her to be running for her life, chased by the unknown. Can Tess escape and save not only herself, but also her loved ones? Or, will she be caught, leaving her no choice but to face her worst nightmare?
Chaysing Dreams is the ultimate love story, full of suspense, friendship, betrayal, tragedy, and sacrifice. In this epic tale, you will laugh and cry with Tess--a story full of twists and turns, keeping you guessing until the end.

About the Author:
Jalpa Williby was born in India and immigrated to the United States at the tender age of eight. A voracious reader, Williby’s adolescence was marked by a promising academic career. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science from the University of Illinois, Williby went on to earn Masters in Physical Therapy from Northwestern University. Her passion for helping her patients led her to a specialty in neuroscience, focusing on children and adults with neurological impairments.

Juggling her time as a wife, a mother, and working full-time, her love for books never subsided. Williby introduces her debut novel, Chaysing Dreams, as she writes with her heart and soul, her passion flowing through every page.

BOOK REVIEW: NOTORIOUS by Leanne Davis

NOTORIOUS (Seaclusion series, Book 2) by Leanne Davis
Published by The Wild Rose Press, November 2013

About the Book:

Luke Tyler wants peace from the grief that has ruled his life in the three years since his wife’s death. Instead he is forced to share a house with Kelly Reeves as they care for their shared nephew. He dislikes everything about Kelly until he begins to glimpse the true woman hiding beneath the notorious reputation that Kelly has carefully created.
Kelly thought her trip to the small town of Seaclusion, Washington, would be nothing but a forgettable two-week vacation. Then she accidentally witnesses Luke’s staggering grief and suddenly reevaluates what is truly important. Soon, Luke becomes the only person she trusts past the facade she has cultivated.
Kelly believes their love can conquer all, but Luke isn’t convinced. Kelly is forced back to her life of fame and fortune, making Luke question which is riskier…letting her walk away or running after her?
MY TAKE:

Sometimes you buy a book because you love the cover, right? This cover drew me right in. I'm not even sure if I read the blurb until after hitting the "buy now" button on Amazon. So the storyline was a little bit of a surprise to me as I started reading, and totally not what I expected.

Which is kind of a theme running through NOTORIOUS.

This is not an action or suspense novel, and most of the emotional turmoil is internal or played out on the small screen between two main characters who are broken, each in their own way. The drama comes from the way the two crash together and then slowly blend until you are rooting for them to figure it out already and be happy. The author throws one obstacle after another into their world, and the suspense is whether Kelly and Luke will be able to handle one. more. thing.

Kelly Reeves is a gorgeous high-paid supermodel, visiting the small town of Seaclusion (along the Washington coastline) for her big sister's wedding. When she was just starting her career, she posed for pin-up fantasy shots, which remain both popular and scandalous to the small town folk. As in, everyone has seen her breasts in print. She's a regular feature in the gossip rags, flitting from one scandal to the next. The paparazzi follow her to her sister's wedding and cause a scene. She's a notorious, self-absorbed party girl.

But that's not who she really is. It's her persona. An act. Her sister understands this and loves her, but the rest of the town? Not so much. Especially not the groom's brother, Luke Tyler. Luke sees Kelly as everything that's wrong with women and the world, and is not shy about sharing his gruff opinion.

But Luke is dealing with angst of his own. His pregnant wife died in a car accident three years before, and he can't get over the pain or the hole left in his heart. He sleepwalks through life, wishing he'd died instead. He pretends everything is fine, and puts on an act for everyone in town, with polite smiles that never quite reach his eyes. Or his heart. His disdain for Kelly is his only true emotion.

Thrown together with Kelly to babysit her sister's son Tim, he figures he'll grit his teeth and bare it like he does everything else in life. But Kelly has other plans - like helping him heal and get on with living. Okay, that sounds kind of suggestive, which isn't her original intent at all, although there is plenty of heat as the story progresses. The interplay between the two main characters is wonderful to watch, as is the gradual unfolding of both Luke and Kelly from one-dimensional stereotypes to emotional people the reader cares about and roots for.

If you enjoy a story with emotional angst and truly wonderful character building, give NOTORIOUS  a shot.

You can find it on AMAZON or from The Wild Rose Press.

Note: This is the second in a series, but I never read the first one. I wish I had, as it sounds like it was a twisty romantic suspense, but now that I know every twist of the resolution I probably won't read it. If you like to read eery book in a series, you might want to start with POISON. I can recommend the author's voice and writing style, so I'm sure the first book is a page turner. Book 2 is totally a stand-alone book, and at times I forgot this was a "book 2" as it wasn't relevant to the characters and their immediate situation, kind of like Carly Phillips' SERENDIPITY series. So if reading every book in the series doesn't matter to you, read this one. I can totally vouch for it being a good read.

BOOK REVIEW: HOLD TIGHT by Cherie Colyer

Hold Tight, by Cherie Colyer
Book 2 of the Embrace series
Published by Omnific Publishing, August 2013

About the Book:
What’s one little spell?
When you’re new to magic, one spell can be the difference between getting what you want...and ruining the lives of everyone you love.
Sixteen-year-old Madison has just embraced her magical powers. The trick now is learning how to control them. She and her boyfriend -and fellow witch- can’t even enjoy a simple kiss without getting shocked when their powers collide. Instead of mastering her new skills, though, Madison is stuck watching her kid brother and doing chores.
But being a witch does have its benefits. With a simple spell, Madison instantly conjures the help she needs around the house. Or so she thinks. Her idea of “help” invites trouble of its own as a pair of dangerous yet enticing beings enter her life. When a classmate disappears soon afterwards, Madison discovers she's the next victim of a threat she's powerless to resist...and there’s nothing it won’t kill to make her surrender.
Caught in the crossfire between two dashing but deadly creatures, Madison must figure out which one to trust and how to rid her world of the other—before one of them destroys her and everyone she cares about.
MY TAKE:

I sooo loved the first book in this series... and while I was excited to read the second book, I worried it might not live up to the first. You know how that goes. Sophomore slump and all. But luckily, I had nothing to fear.

HOLD TIGHT does not disappoint. Cherie Colyer does a wonderful job in Book 2 of this series, introducing new characters and keeping both the action and tension running full steam ahead. I love this author's writing style, and her exclusive use of Madison's first person POV. Book 2 stays YA while ratcheting up the stakes in her life and the lives of those she cares for.

The book begins about a month after the end of the first book, EMBRACE. Madison has fully accepted her witchy powers, but still has problems kissing her boyfriend, Isaac. Like a "built-in parental control," their liplocks always end with powers colliding and electric shocks (not the good kind, either.)

The catalyst for this next adventure is Madison's curiosity, when she attempts to use a summoning spell to get a fairy to help with her housework and chores. Big mistake. The fae don't give favors for free, especially when one of the fairies you summon has a gripe with the boy you love.

Now Madison has to figure out how to send the Fae Prince of the Winter Court back to his world before he and Isaac battle over her. Throw in a crossroad demon and a Fae Princess of the Summer Court and Madison has enough trouble to keep her busy for the rest of junior year.

It comes to a head when her brother Chase in injured and only magic can save him...but choosing which magic will change Madison's life forever.

If you haven't read the first book in this series, I would recommend reading that first. And then grab this one in quick succession. The author is still at work on Book 3 - and I'm totally looking forward to reading and reviewing that one as well!

About the Author:

Cherie believes there’s a little magic in everyone. She also believes in following her dreams and never giving up. Her books are proof of that. Besides writing, Cherie enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, the great outdoors, and she loves a challenge. While she has had many great experiences, what she finds most satisfying is seeing her children and stories grow into their own exciting and distinct entities.

Cherie lives in Illinois with her family.

Excerpt from MY KIND OF CRAZY, by Katie O'Sullivan. The Wild Rose Press 2014

“Excuse me?”

She turned to find the stranger from the corner table on the sidewalk next to her. He was much taller than she’d guessed, maybe six feet or a little more, with long legs and wide shoulders. “You left these on the counter.” He held out her sunglasses. “I thought you might need them.”

She looked from the glasses up into his smiling face, and felt her knees go a bit weak. Up close, his eyes were the most brilliant shade of green Kendall had ever seen. Her stomach tightened into a knot and the air around her seemed to disappear, making it hard to breathe. Laugh lines radiated from his eyes and the small creases of dimples in his cheeks as he smiled. Kendall exhaled, and reminded herself that it didn’t matter how breathtakingly cute he was. The guy was having an affair with a married woman.

“Umm, thanks, I guess.” Her voice sounded as awkward as she felt. She reached to take her glasses, and realized that both hands were full with the coffee cup and bakery box. She juggled to balance the large box on top of the cup’s plastic lid to free up a hand.

“Here, let me help.” He stepped in even closer. Instead of taking either the box or the cup out of her hands, he slipped the sunglasses on her head, sliding them through her long curls and into place over her ears. This close, the clean scents of soap and citrusy shampoo wafted from his still-damp hair.

Major sparks tingled throughout her entire body, his hands lingering for a moment in her hair before he seemed to catch himself and take a step back. “My name’s Jon, by the way. And you are?”

LRT Blog Tour: ALIVE, By Megan Martin

As a host for LRT Book Tours, I'm giving a shout out today to Megan Martin and her new release, ALIVE.

This is a New Adult, paranormal, dystopic future tale and... a zombie novel! What does that mean? A whole lot of sex, violence, blood and hands-on killing. Did I mention the blood? Not my usual cup of tea, I must admit - I like my zombies more complex and refined, like Kate Evangelista's Taste or Isaac Marion's Warm Bodies.

But ALIVE is a fast-paced romp, full of action and complex emotional trauma. Here's a bit about the book:

About the Book:
Flesh-eating zombies, dirty sex, and a shattered past…What’s more dangerous—the man who broke her heart or those trying to eat it?
Fighting to survive, Eve finds herself alone in the world after the Crave—the only parallel of her former life. On the hunt for her sister, she runs into Gage—the first and only boy to have her heart and break it. It’s been four years and he isn’t a boy anymore, nor is he the same person he used to be. Against her better judgment, Eve agrees to stay with him when he divulges information on a safe haven near the small town they grew up in—but that doesn’t mean she has to like it…
Returning home elicits a myriad of emotions that both Eve and Gage thought they had buried. The past and present collide and they are forced to the face bitter deceits that ruined them in the before and threaten to destroy them now…

Megan D. Martin is a multi-published author, mother, student and editor. She writes New Adult Romance with a bloody, sexy twist. Her characters are damaged souls who find each other in the dark and have to fight for a love they may or may not deserve.

In her spare time Megan plays Batman with her incredibly sweet son, watches too many episodes of Vampire Diaries (Ian, call me!), buys fish for her many fish tanks, and has long talks with Gandaldore (the little writing wizard that sits on her desk.) She is well known for losing her keys and has more than one nerdy tattoo.
